This week was quite fun! I had to work a little longer in the lab so that I could take Thursday off, but then myself and several of the interns, our supervisors, and other PhD students spent the day doing a hiking beer tour. The German countryside is just amazing; I litterally felt like I was walking in a movie, maybe The Lord of the Rings or something. And the beer, of course, was even better! It’s going to be strange coming back to the States and not only seeing sub-par beer, but also not being able to drink it!
On Saturday, a few friends and I went to Fürth, just outside Erlangen, to watch the football (soccer, for the kids back home) game. I’ve never been to a professional soccer game in the States, but this I imagine, is also something that Germans do better. The energy was crazy! People were chanting in German the entire game, booing whenever a call was made for the other team and when a call could have been made for our team, and cheering whenever our team had the possession basically. If you remember Germany’s games during the last World Cup, they were basically the champions of the dramatic “fall, hug the knee, and writhe in pain” after barely being touched, it was no different during this game. And it was encouraged by the fans! That was the one thing I didn’t participate in. Just be a man and win the game with skill!
Sunday, I went to Nürnberg for basically the first time (I had walked around for an hour or so one time when I was flying out of there). It is the second largest city in Bavaria, following Munich, so it was actually pretty cool, even on a Sunday. We saw the castle, wandered through the streets, stopped by the farmer’s market, listened to some live music. It was a nice way to spend the afternoon.
